- Douay–Rheims Bible app:
The Douay–Rheims Bible is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English made by members of the Catholic seminary English College, France.
It was translated principally by Gregory Martin, an Oxford-trained scholar. The New Testament appeared at Rheims in 1582 and the Old Testament at Douai in 1609.
Between 1749 and 1752, the translation was revised as its purpose was to improve readability and comprehensibility to make it easier to understand for anyone who was interested in reading it. This edition was first published in America in 1790. Several American editions followed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Douay-Rheims version, which predates the King James by a few years, (the complete KJV was published in 1611, but the complete Douay-Rheims in 1609) was the standard Bible for English-speaking Catholics until the twentieth century.
The list of books of the Catholic Bibles differ from those used by Christian Protestants.
