App summary

Dictionary of the Danish Language (ODS) - "the great Danish dictionary". ODS is the largest Danish dictionary ever published. The book version is 28 Volume + 5 supplementary volume (almost 1.5 linear meters), and the dictionary contains the entire 225,000 entries.

Now available on the app - easy to fit in your pocket.

The dictionary is a historical dictionary that describes the Danish language year 1700-1950. It is not therefore the importance of modern words like "pc", "bummer" and "kiggekø". On the other hand you will find detailed explanations of everyday words like "lip" and a host of rare or old words like "halløjhat", "afskørte" and "misdædisk". You'll also discover that the word "condescending" on ODS time meant "gentle and merciful," and that "pathetic" yet could mean 'pathetic' but "feeling full and solemn."

Most words and meanings are illustrated with quotations from classic Danish authors.

Dictionary of the Danish Language is part of ordnet.dk and published by the Danish Language and Literature (DSL), which has more than 100 years of experience in publishing dictionaries and behind the largest Danish native language dictionaries. The project is supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.

The app requires internet access. That way you are sure to always have access to the latest version of the dictionary as we improve it without having to update the app. And it's all free. Enjoy!
