2024-11-02 | Anita Danza | I had it installed for one minute and un-installed. I expected ads in a free version, but the ads were obnoxious. It filled the whole screen with no x out. There was in small print in upper right hand corner to continue to dictionary. Then there was a banner ad on the bottom of the screen when I got to the dictionary.
2024-10-07 | KL | I only need the thesaurus for on-the-go writing projects. Of course, the thesaurus is only available if you pay for premium. No thanks. Edit (10/7/24): After response from the Oxford team on my initial review, my star still remains. Maybe a generous 2 star. I was able to find what I need through another, completely free, app. I wouldn't upgrade this app and pay a premium when I can very easily have what I need elsewhere.
2024-09-25 | Mitzi Platillero | Update Sep 2024 - still getting ads. Saying "sorry for the inconvenience caused" and doing nothing to fix it is bad customer service. Cancelled subscription. Update Jun 2024: Almost every time I tap the word of the day in the notification panel, it shows a pop up ad. I've had the app for several months. It is still a problem. Original: Ads in paid subscription 😞 I go to word of the day, and it shows an ad with loud audio. This is unacceptable in a $20 / year subscription for a dictionary.
2024-08-28 | Laura Crafton | It's, quite obviously, useful in a great number of different ways. Spell checking and definitions clearly being the top of the list. The pronunciation assistance has been the most primarily useful one, though, for my family. We have (myself not included - I just watch and listen) arguments and disagreements over such that have, in the past, lasted for months! So, yes, this is nothing less than perfect for those in need of a dictionary service.
2024-08-21 | Mario Nunes | Every two words and even returning to the app results in an intrusive ad, which makes the entire experience seem like an extortion scheme to get you to pay $2.99 a month. "Please pay $2.99 a month so your experience can be minimally usable". I'd pay that a year for just an ad free experience, but the current model leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just let me pay once to remove these terrible ads!
2024-01-17 | Sterling Frost | The app is great... BUT... email verification does not function at all. No verification emails are delivered when you create an account. Then, you can't use the app on a second device because the app informs you that you haven't verified your email. Infuriating. Furthermore, the "forgot password" functionality suffers the same fate of no emails being delivered. It's impossible to reset your password if you never receive the reset password email.
2024-01-16 | Zikonde Nyirenda | Response: I know it's difficult to maintain a reliable dictionary, but you too should be aware of the market around you. Try staying up to date, maybe change how the business runs. Its either ads or subscription, but your app is useless without a subscription yet somehow still contains ads. Worse off is the functionality hasn't changed much since the first time I used it back in 2014. With time, you might only be left with older customers unaware of better deals, no new ones.
2023-12-08 | E. Stan Foster | The Oxford application had a free version, fast and user-friendly. I happily used it daily, for years. Now it is a disaster, a perverse business model. The "free version" is so crippled it is virtually unusable. Ads obscure the entire page, difficult to delete. No toggling between the two languages. Freezes quickly. FORCES high-priced subscription. There are many dictionary apps that function well and fairly. Forget Oxford. Tragically, it has been corrupted by corporate greed. How sad.
2023-10-09 | Kevin Iacolucci | This was a great dictionary tool. I started using it for the definitions and the etymologys. Word of the day too. I liked it so much I paid a little over $5 for it a couple years ago. I thought that was supposed to support the app, keep me free of ads, and support the offline dictionary. Apparently my payment has lost its value, because now I'm getting hit with Temu ads every time I open The app. Usually when apps go to ads they grandfather in those who paid. This doesn't bode well.
2023-07-06 | jihad abi moussa | The pronunciation is not clearly defined in which English accent. I think it will be much better if we get the 3 main English accents for every word (US, UK & AU), along with its IPA in case it may differ. Otherwise, perhaps creating 3 dictionaries for each English accent is another option. Lastly, it's way appreciatable if you specify the type of all nouns (Countable or Uncountable), some of them already specified but not all of them. Other than that, i would give it 5 stars. Thanks! |
