2022-09-21 | Anthony Nguyen | audio quality is not as good at the phone app. no way to switch between video and audio only. cannot search for albums or artist, instead there is only the normal youtube video search. its a better experience (especially for audio quality) to just cast to your tv from your youtube music app on your phone
2022-02-22 | Mark Barnes | (Using on Chromecast with Google TV) If I could give it negative stars I would. It will NOT play MUSIC. It will play ONLY VIDEOS!!! This app is a complete and total rip-off. It seems to be the exact same app as the regular YouTube app, but with the "Music" tab on the left pre-selected. And just like the YouTube app, it WILL NOT PLAY MUSIC that I have uploaded. Using the YouTube Music web site, I created a Play List containing only music tracks that I uploaded. When I try to run that Play List using this app, I get an error message saying the Play List contains no videos!!! VIDEOS??? Is this a joke? What person in Google management decided that this was a good idea? Did they just want to have something - ANYTHING - that had the word "music" in the app store for this device just to save face or something? So people wouldn't be installing some other app to play music? This app should be removed from the Play Store. It's downright misleading. A complete rip-off.
2022-01-04 | John Conner | Terrible on so many levels. The most recent annoyance - If google loses the license to music in your playlists the phone will be forever trapped in a "looking for incomplete downloads" cycle. To fix it the user has to go through their own playlists and manually remove each song that google no longer has rights to. Seem like it would take one developer half a day to fix. What the actual, google? Additionally, about half the time the app won't open on the first try. Google play music was a much better app, but now we get this steaming pile.
2021-11-30 | Don Lytle | YouTube Music on Android TV sucks. What a horrible experience. Want to search for an album by an artist? No can do (unless you have uploaded it and then navigate to the album alphabetically). This is the worst music experience ever. What happened to Google Play Music? The integration with YouTube means you cannot search music only. All searches return YouTube videos. I waited a bit to see if Google would fix this rotten app on Android TV. I guess they don't think it's worth the upgrade. What are you waiting for Google? Please release a stand-alone music app. Thank you!
2021-09-28 | Dan Swick | Truly mind-boggling that this is supposed to compete with Spotify and Apple Music. Slowest user interface BY FAR (just try scrolling a long playlist), god-awful recommendations, sketchy sound quality, and essentially no differentiating features. What the heck? Adding insult to injury, it's essentially unusable on Google TV and Android Auto -- can't play entire albums without crashing and when it doesn't crash it ignores your request and just starts playing random garbage from its awful recommendation engine.
2021-06-17 | Mark Brock-Cancellieri | Seldom works as promised. If you want to stream random songs this might be fine, but it DOES NOT WORK to play your own music as requested. Completely fails to shuffle playlists: plays the same songs, in the same order, over and over, every time. WARNING - if you use this service to upload your own music files you can NOT get them back, except as unlabeled zip files without folders; they gave me mine as 44 different 2gig files I had to download individually. Crazy! Display of titles is shockingly awful: it often can't fit the whole song title or band name, across various platforms. The inability to select more than one track at a time is absurd and makes manipulating Playlists extremely cumbersome. Works half as well as Pandora but insists on reverting to its own recommendations rather than the requested songs. Functionality with Android Auto is spotty as best: in the car I can't NOT shuffle a playlist, on the TV via AndoirdTV I can only play a playlist in exact order, and using voice commands to my speaker it can't shuffle. Paying for Google1 access to try and fix the bugs was completely pointless, an offensive waste of time and money ("Have you tried resetting and reinstalling it?" LOL great support). They kept promising it was going to get better and it just keeps working worse... I've been a Premium member and was a Google Music Play user since day one (and happily would have paid that fee forever!), but now I'm quitting because I'm paying them a monthly fee in order to NOT stream my own music. This has been a horrendous nightmare inflicted on me by those I trusted most with my precious music library, and I don't plan on letting them forget about their failure any time soon. The fact that so many users have been requesting the addition of a Sleep Time for so long-- and it goes ignored-- shows me they just don't care. Most frustrating of all, every single problem I've mentioned was non-existent on the Google Play Music planform before this awful "upgrade." Music lovers should steer far clear of this app if you hope to control your own listening experience.
2021-03-23 | SigonLegacy | Absolutely horrendous. If I wanted to watch music videos, I'd just look up music videos in YouTube. This isn't even an app. If YouTube isn't installed, trying to open it just prompts to download YouTube. 1: Give us the ability to play pure audio with no music videos. 2: Give us the option to play music in the background like literally every other audio app can. 3: Make it an actual app and not just a new tab in YouTube.
2021-03-15 | john kalas | I HATE it. Why is there not a radio option on my Android TV (Shield). It just takes me to YouTube videos. Not useful. I will be switching if I find something that works or going back to using my own MP3s. F this App though and the fact that Google made me switch from Google Play Music to this trash. I also can no longer play songs that I used to listen to, and no one under 13 can use the app, so if you have kids, too bad for them. New observation - if casting from my phone to try to make it KIND OF USEFUL... it disconnects so that I cannot control any of the playlist fuctions with my AV remote. THIS APP SUCKS! Bonus Suckiness- If you use a Google mini/ Nest Mini to try to broadcast to a better sounding external Bluetooth speaker, it will cut out and stutter making it unusable. This is fully documented and not resolved. this app completely sucks, esp coming from Google Play Music.
2021-02-04 | Hans Eckman | This is the worst service merge from Google Play Music and worst Google app I've ever used. It's purely intended to force you into paying for a subscriptions with constant interruptions. You can't play your own music to a Bluetooth speaker without ads. Why would I want all my video playlists merged into my music lists? There is no way to hide or remove them without impacting YouTube. The app is so bad, I installed a different player for local music files.
2021-01-25 | Andrew Murphy | some aspects of the app/service are okay, and i appreciate that they mostly did an okay job at transitioning important features and functionality over from play music before forcing everyone to swap, but youtube music still just is not good from a user experience point of view. the interface is confusing and inconsistent. the way it hooks into my normal youtube video recommendations and ruins that experience too. the way it tries to tie music videos into music listening, which i NEVER want. The Android TV "version" of this app is even more offensive, given it's literally just a link to the "music" tab of the standard Youtube app, and lacks a ton of functionality for things like seeing my library, filtering by artist, shuffling music from my library, etc. not to mention the playback interface is boring as hell and almost completely static, which isn't great for some types of displays (oled) long term. I usually just end up casting from my phone, which at least has a dedicated app with more sane functionality. I really just wish that instead of throwing away GPM in favor of YTM, they had gone the opposite route instead. GPM had its own flaws, but GPM kept most of those flaws and added a bunch of new ones. Maybe it's time to go back and give other streaming services a shot... |
