2024-11-26 | Colin | I liked the Fluent Forever book, but this app leaves a lot to be desired. It is very buggy and crashes a lot. When reviewing flash cards, it often doesn't display the next button in order to move on to the next flash card. EDIT: (November 25) Thank you for the response. I enabled swiping and can now get through flash cards.
2024-05-07 | Justin H | I was using other apps, Duolingo / Babel, and neither did a good job training my ear to hear the language I was trying to learn. The app is good to use for the first few months of learning a new language but then will want you to pay for one on one speaking lessons, which I couldn't afford. Their customer service was helpful in refunding my money when there was confusion about my subscription not being cancelled.
2024-02-27 | Christina Brown | The Fluent Forever book helped me become fluent in Japanese, so I was excited to try the app for French. Spaced repetition is the only way I learn, and I love how easy it is to make flashcards. But I wish I could set a max # of cards to review per session (like Anki) instead of manually increasing after 25. Plus it will show the other side of a card in the next set of 25, which isn't a valid review because I just saw it. I also wish I could turn off the reminders that appear before every review.
2023-10-20 | Katy F | This is the best language learning approach I've tried. After reading the Fluent Forever book, I was so happy there was an App for its method of learning. And it actually sticks. The app itself isn't fancy looking, but I don't mind it's interface as it's very straightforward. The App support is also very prompt and easy to communicate with. They're passionate about their product and wanting to help their community and improve their app experience.
2023-02-16 | Andrew Reitz | Much better than making all my own flash cards in Anki, but the app has some rough edges and quality of life improvements. Some examples are as follows. Having the word I spelled next to the answer and preferably highlighted differences would be helpful, especially for users with dislexia. When spelling, having the input default to lower case would also help since the answer is all lowercase. The tap targets are often small and I tap the wrong thing. I think a burry card option would be nice.
2022-03-12 | Susan A. Shay | As a teacher, I am finding this app very powerful. Vocabulary springs to my mind because of the spaced repetition. This has really helped me speed up my learning of my fourth language (French). I believe they could develop this app to make it even better by expanding the base of available sentences. But, having tested out many other language learning apps,I am loving it so far, because it is tailored specifically to the user's interests. In other words, you direct your own learning.
2021-10-21 | Tony | I wish I would've had this for high school Spanish (always terrible) and German (got a BA but didn't retain as much as I'd hoped). Fluent Forever is the most effective way to get started learning a language. (I'll explain pros and cons...) The app starts with proper pronunciation and installs a high-frequency vocabulary in your brain, in the native language. It uses spaced repetition like Anki and SuperMemo (my favorite and the most powerful tool for learning)... BUT... ... Fluent Forever is the only tool that includes all the correct language basics, in the right order, at the right time for *your* memory. And it includes pictures, examples sentences, and audio from native speakers. (That way, you aren't learning a new language by translating from your native language; it'll be easier to think in your native language. I've seen some reviews about price, and look -- I get it. Compared to a free app with no curriculum or road map and a high learning curve (Anki), not-free is expensive. Compared to a content-mill app that teaches you how to translate between languages, it may be a few more dollars. But look at it this way: I spent $12/hour to practice Spanish with a tutor, and I retained much more of what I learned in Fluent Forever. And my parents and I paid more than $20K for my college degree quite a few years ago, with a partial scholarship. If you use this app, you *will* build a lasting foundation for fluency -- much faster than "study hard and forget" methods. For me, I'll be switching to SuperMemo because: * I have specific, long-term knowledge acquisition goals * I Incremental Read * and I do my learning in SuperMemo. But there's a heavy learning curve to SuperMemo (I'm still learning after more than a year). And for people who are getting started with a language, Fluent Forever is your best ticket. NOTE: The pronunciation trainer is phenomenal because it shows exactly where your mouth and tongue need to move to make new sounds; I only wish the video/pictures/audio for the IPA pronunciation part of the app were its own flashcard.
2021-04-21 | Jude Prashaw | Avoid downloading app: The app continued to crash when I tried to review a lesson. I contacted customer support; they responded with "reinstall the app," which I did. It continued to crash, I reinstalled, it crashed again. I was not able to continue with any future lessons. Extremely frustrating. I cancelled my subscription. I continue to receive emails from fluent forever support team asking me to rate their response. They do respond, with numerous emails, however they don't fix the app.
2020-12-28 | Kyle B | I'm about two months into studying Japanese with this app (from square zero, no prior knowledge) For pronunciation, vocabulary and learning syllabaries (Alphabet) it has been a delight. I echo that lack of play/pause or landscape for videos is a bummer. Font for listen and correct buttons should be different colors. More videos sooner on sentence structure instead of purely vocab and pronunciation would be nice (have to go to other sites for now). Overall great at vocab and has room to improve.
2020-12-10 | Poora Pueblo | I have been studying Mandarin with Duolingo for about 6 months, and I was looking for help with pronunciation, so I found this somewhat useful. My only complaint is that the videos seemed rushed, like they were trying to cram too much into a very short video. It was too expensive to continue, but I think it was useful as a supplement to Duolingo. |
