Very easy to navigate, and things but i feel like there should be a option ti search by definition, im not sure if it has this but if not then add a thing where you can hear the word? overall a pretty good app, has helped me increase my vocabulary a little. I wish there was also a thing where you could like be quized but they might not add that bc it could de-shape the app from its original purpose.

It only gets three. It doesn't give the list of derivative words; something which gives me pleasure and a better repertoire of smoken hot vocabulary words to impiously press (impress) any readers I might have. If you add all the features that are on you web page, you got me. I'll give you a years subscription.

I enjoy the app. Ive used the website for years and finally just downloaded the app a couple months ago. The only thing I'd like to see change is when I highlight a word I'd like to easily press define for the non-english words the same way I could from the website. However It's only a few seconds to just switch to the web and search it. I still give 5 stars anyway :)

this is my favorite etymologies application by far. I love linguistics and studying language in an effort partly to know words, their meanings and origins...and also to keep up with my brothere, John, who is super smart and a superb polymath and hard worker and savvy wordsmith, linguist and lightening fast brain...as the song goes, lol, "all the young kids with the pumped up kicks, you'd better run, better run, faster than my brother..." thank you, thank you, thank you for a tremendous app

It feels silly to review this app. I want to review it as the website. The website didn't ask though. This is the single most important tool I can recommend to a student who doesn't cheat, but wants to live on Easy Street. Stop what you're doing. Download now. I personally recommend this website to all of my students. The ones that use it early, use it often. It's like having a super power. I used it to become fluent in 5 languages and get a math degree. Thanks, etymonline.

It's obviously very well researched, and a valuable tool. Unfortunately, as someone with an attention deficit, trying to focus on text with a third of the screen covered by a moving VIDEO ad is an exercise in futility. If you're at all serious about your free version—and don't simply consider it a way to convince people to buy the ad-free version—wouldn't static ads be more appropriate (one might even say merciful!) in an app requiring such attention to detail? 📱🚦⚡🚨 🤔❔

Site has been useful resource for years so I subscribed, something I rarely do. I have the receipt of my payment. Sadly the ads are still showing, it says premium expired but when I try to sub it says sub is up to date. Your feedback page is FULL of similar stories without any response from you. Please drop contact info to resolve this. I support this app and do not want to take this to Google or PayPal to dispute my payment. I want this rating to be 5 stars again. Overdue edit: Google refunded.

I love this app. It makes my inner logophile happy. I particularly like that it doesn't just say "from old french" like many other etymology sites. The etymology will be taken back as far as possible (often to proto-indo-european for most English words). The app is functional, the ads are relatively unobtrusive (for a free app), and I have not yet found the limits of its database. If I had one wish it would be to be able to click on root words to get audio pronunciations.

Excellent! would prefer options to remove ads which doesn't require tracking or installing other apps etc... Would like to see full integration into linux systems from creation of console application with both cli and gui interface. would be nice to have easy access from my linux writing tools. So a Linux office style suite plugin integration would be nice. I think etymology needs to be the most popular topic for our species right now.

Great resource, intuitive. Going back to a word's root and checking the words generated from it is a bit clunky at times but forming a structure like that takes a great deal of planning that I don't expect from any app. The price of premium membership is a little too high, even if it was a one time purchase, which it isn't. Dark mode would be great and even my phone (miui) can't force dark mode like it does with other apps for some reason. Having said all this, I use it daily. 9/10.
